Go on a roadside eatery road trip

Posted

Nothing says summer like pulling over on a New England road and stopping for a cone or a fish fry at one of the many roadside dairy bars that feed New Englanders' love of ice cream and all things fried all summer long. We took a trip through Berkshire County, Mass., and Bennington and Windham counties in Vermont, to visit a few of our favorites. There's still plenty of summer days to hit up these local favorite spots — but be prepared to wait in line and get a little messy. But it's OK, don't let a little-melted ice cream keep you from ordering the large cone. Enjoy!

Pedrin's Dairy Bar

1360 Curran Highway, North Adams, Mass.

Pedrin's is a family owned and operated fast-food dairy bar that still boasts original fan favorites like the fish fry, a delicious piece of the finest North Atlantic haddock delicately fried and served a roll, and the homemade onion rings, deep fried to crispy perfection. Also, Pedrin's serves ice cream, both scooped and soft serve, with all sorts of delicious toppings to choose from.

The Bistro Box

937 Main St., Great Barrington, Mass.

The Bistro Box offers a wide variety of soups and sandwiches, as well as salads, burgers, hot dogs and fish tacos. And, for dessert, it offers ice cream cones, shakes and ice cream floats.

Top of the Hill Grill

632 Putney Road, Brattleboro, Vt.

In addition to hickory smoked beef brisket, pulled pork and ribs, smoked turkey, grilled chicken and fresh ground burgers, Top of the Hill Grill features Mexican and Cajun specialties — chilli, gumbo, jambalaya, fajitas and quesadillas. For vegetarians, there are tempeh wraps and burgers, as well as a variety of fresh salads and sides. The "Kids Menu" includes mac and cheese, hot dogs, sloppy joes, burgers and chicken.

Billy T's Northside Dairy Bar

217 Northside Drive, Bennington, Vt.

Billy T's offers a great selection of home-made food, like french fries, fish fry, and Big Bill's burgers. Over 50 flavors of soft-serve ice cream and a great selection of hard ice cream is also available.

Snow's Arlington Dairy Bar

3158 Vt Route 7a, Arlington, Vt.

If you're looking for an old-fashioned dairy bar with a delicious menu, this is the place. Enjoy burgers, fish fry and thin, crisp, golden fries. Bring the whole family for lunch or dinner, but don't forget to end with some soft-serve ice cream. If you're feeling adventurous, ask for the chocolate dip!
