Letter: School staff show support for O'Connor

Posted
To the Editor:

We are writing to offer our support for Jerry O'Connor, the assistant principal of Bennington Elementary School.

The Bennington School District Board of Directors made the decision not to renew his contract on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018.

As a staff, our hearts are heavy and we are concerned for the future and safety of our school going forward. Jerry O'Connor has dedicated his life to children, as a parent, teacher, coach, and for the last six years, as assistant principal. He is one of the most dedicated educators and community members.

He has spent tireless hours acclimating our new principal to the school and community. We have made great strides this year because Principal Edie Dunn and Jerry complement each other perfectly. To bring a new assistant principal in at this time will be a setback and a huge burden on Principal Dunn.

Benn El has a very challenging population that includes significant poverty, homelessness and trauma. We don't need change, we need consistency.

We are asking the BSD Board of Directors to reconsider their decision and to renew Assistant Principal Jerry O'Connor's contract.
