MAU football tryouts start Monday

BENNINGTON — Tryouts for Mount Anthony varsity Football begins on Monday, August 14.

Tryouts will run Monday through Friday Aug. 14-18 on the Vermont Veterans' home practice field for all players grades 9 through 12. Practice will be Monday- Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and players will meet in the high school weight room.

The equipment and parent meeting is August 13th from 5-7 p.m. in the High School auditorium.

3-D Archery Competition

BENNINGTON — The Catamount Bow Hunters are hosting a 3D Archery Competition on Sunday, August 13.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. and goes until noon. Adults are $10, youths are $5 and cubs are free with a paid adult.

Everyone is welcome and food and beverages are available.

The club is located on Route 7 South, Fuller Road West, the first left past the Apple Barn.

Shaftsbury Youth Soccer

SHAFTSBURY — Southshire Youth Soccer is designed to put kids first and winning and egos second. It is meant to be a fun, engaging team opportunity for kids to learn about soccer and enjoy the game. If you haven't played in the past but would like to try soccer, we encourage you to sign-up.

Southshire Soccer runs from the first Saturday after Labor Day for eight weeks. This year the Kindergarten through third graders play each Saturday at 9 a.m. at Willow Park starting September 9 through October 28. Volunteer coaches introduce kids to concepts of soccer and the game.

Enrollment for players in grades K-3 will be open until September 9.

Players in grades 4, 5 and 6 participate on travel teams. This age level practices two evenings a week and have games on Saturdays either on our home field at Willow or Howard Park or in neighboring towns including Arlington, Cambridge, Manchester, Hoosick Falls and Greenwich. Practices for the 4th thru 6th grade teams start at the end of August with the first game played on September 9.

Travel team registration closed on July 25, however, there's limited availability at certain age groups.

Vermont soccer officials looking for new refs

LUDLOW — Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Vermont Soccer Officials Association and becoming eligible to officiate varsity and sub-varsity soccer games is encouraged to attend a training in Southern Vermont. The next training is being held at Whitcomb High School in Bethel, on August 26 at 8:30 a.m. The training includes learning the rules of the game, a test, and a field practice.

Goldsmith tournament

BENNINGTON — The annual Lee Goldsmith Memorial Soccer Tournament will take place on August 12 at Willow Park.

Players have to be enrolled in high school as of September and only all-male or co-ed teams are allowed.

Each team has six field players and a goalie and with no-offside rules and large goals, there will be lots of action and goal-scoring.

The cost to participate is $10 per player and teams must register on the morning of the tournament by calling or texting MAU boys soccer coach Mike Molloy at 802-375-4006. Check in will start at 10 a.m. at Middle Willow.
