Remembering Stephen Sandy
Stephen Sandy, a longtime member of the Bennington College faculty and one of Vermont's great poets, died one year ago on Nov. 7, 2016. His passing, although not unexpected due to poor health, still came as a shock to the literary community and created a void in our town which has yet to be filled. He was a serious scholar in the old-fashioned realm of wordsmithing. He had command of a wonderful vocabulary that sent many of his readers, especially me, to the dictionary. His mastery of all poetic forms and styles was second to none. When Sandy's friend and fellow poet John Ashbery passed away last month it reminded me of the loss of our own master poet. As we observe the anniversary of his death we would do well to recall just how lucky we were to live in the era of these giants of the written word.
