Strong first half propels Cambridge over Hoosick Falls
The Indians took control early and stunted the Panthers offensively, holding Hoosick Falls to just five points in the first half. Opportune scoring on the other end would give Cambridge a 29-point lead heading into the break and that would set the tone for the rest of the game.
Lilly Phillips paced the Indians on offense as she was the only player in the game to score in the double-digits, notching 12 points in the contest.
The rest of the scoring was very spread out for Cambridge. Sophie Phillips and Fiona Mooney both scored eight points, while Hailey Herrington, Victoria Dupuis and Helen Mooney all added six points.
Coming into the game Panthers sophomore center Logan Thayne was expected to be a major threat for the Indians defense to stop, but she was held to just four points in the contest as Cambridge made a point to keep her tightly defended throughout.
Senior forward Eliza Whitman led the way for Hoosick Falls, scoring nine points, with two baskets from 3-point range.
The Indians did a great job of getting to the foul line throughout the game, but the second quarter in particular stood out in that regard. The Phillips twins together notched eight of their team's 18 second quarter points from the free-throw line. The pair missed just one shot from the charity stripe all quarter.
The Panthers did show some major fight in the fourth quarter as they outscored Cambridge 10-8 in the final quarter.
The win improves the Indians to 1-0, while the loss drops Hoosick Falls to 1-3.
The Panthers are back in action Friday against Saratoga Central Catholic on the road at 7:30 p.m. Cambridge returns to action Friday as well against Cooperstown Central. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m. at Delaware Academy.
