SVC announces staffing changes Thursday
Michael Nosek has been named the institution's Assistant Director of Athletics for Communications while head men's basketball coach Dan Engelstad was tabbed the Assistant Director of Athletics for External Operations. Head men's soccer coach Greg Gilmore will take on the role of SVC's Athletics Communications Assistant, and head women's soccer coach Michael Zauzig will add the title of Athletics Facilities Liaison.
Thursday's announcement comes a few weeks after Christin Gowan was named SVC's Associate Director of Athletics.
"I'm excited about the continued growth of the Athletics Department," Hashim said. "I have great confidence in our staff and coaches. I believe these changes will strengthen our organizational structure and provide an enhanced college athletics experience for our student-athletes."
Nosek was originally hired as Southern Vermont's sports information director in the summer of 2012 before taking on the role of the College's scheduling coordinator in 2013. He has been a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) since returning to Bennington; he has helped a pair of Mountaineers garner CoSIDA Academic All-District honors in that time, including one who was then named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team.
Nosek's elevated role will see him continue to oversee the management of the SVC athletics website and the department's social media accounts, coordinate scheduling for the 12 varsity athletics teams, and supervise event management for the College's home events. He will also be responsible for the solicitation and implementation of sponsorships for SVC Athletics and assist Hashim with New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) and NCAA responsibilities.
"I'm extremely excited about where SVC Athletics is and the positive direction that it's heading in," Nosek said. "That is a testament to the support we receive from the College's administration, faculty, and staff, as well as the hard work and dedication to the department displayed by the coaches, athletic administration, and — most importantly — the student-athletes. It's very rewarding getting to do what I do in covering them and their accomplishments, and the sense of pride I have in the school is constantly being strengthened."
Engelstad came to SVC in 2013 to lead the Mountaineers' men's basketball program. His team won the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III New England Championship in 2015 before claiming the NECC title in 2016. He also has developed a knack for organizing and directing successful camps and clinics on the SVC campus including his summer basketball camp which has grown from eight participants in his first year to a staggering 80 this past August.
As the Assistant AD for External Operations, Engelstad will be responsible for transportation coordination for the athletics teams and assist in the budgeting process for the department's promotions, advertising, and marketing efforts. Engelstad will also act as a liaison for the other coaches in the facilitation of camps and clinics — as well as leading athletic fundraising campaigns which are to include capital projects, planned giving, and special events.
"It is an honor to be named Assistant AD for External Operations," Engelstad said. "It has been great to see the development of our department in my five years at SVC, and I am excited about the opportunity to play a bigger role in its continued success. I am proud to work for a department that continues to develop its coaches and staff, and I want to congratulate all of the staff members on their new roles."
Gilmore returned to Southern Vermont in May 2016 to head up the men's soccer team. This year, he led the Mountaineers to their first postseason appearance since 2012 and their most NECC victories since the 2011 squad he played on went undefeated (6-0-1) in league action. The former intern in SVC's Sports Information Office assisted with the department's communications this past spring — a role that will expand with his new title.
As the Athletics Communications Assistant, Gilmore will provide support for the maintenance of the Mountaineers' website and social media accounts, help with the statistical tracking and reporting for home contests, and supervise the work study event staff.
"I'm thrilled to be working with Mike in a new aspect of the Athletics Department," Gilmore said. "Mike has done a tremendous job elevating our athletic profile as head of the Sports Information Office, and I'm looking forward to helping this department continue to grow."
Zauzig is the most tenured staff member in the Athletics Department after taking the reins of the College's women's soccer program in the summer of 2011. Since that time, he has led his team to seven-straight NECC postseason appearances while seeing his squad and players break a slew of school records. Southern Vermont set a new single season wins high (12) under his guidance this year, and he sits just one win shy of being tied for the program's most all-time victories by a coach (60).
In his role as the Athletics Facilities Liaison, Zauzig will work with internal and external staff and clients to meet logistical requirements, and he'll serve as the liaison between departments, vendors, and contractors for facility and venue inquiries. Additionally, he will continue coordinating the maintenance of the Mountaineer Athletic Center's weight room and its equipment while also assisting with the set up and break down of athletic venues.
"I'm excited about this opportunity and the ability to help SVC Athletics move forward," Zauzig commented. "I greatly appreciate that Sharief has trusted me with these additional responsibilities. I'm glad that I can continue to help around the building and work with the staff to improve the facilities—as well as the student-athlete experience."
